When we look all around, we see huge buildings, small houses, bridges, sidewalks, roads, walls, offices, etc. How often do we stop to think about how this might happen? They weren't always there, they evolved with humanity. There was a time when clay had to be baked in specially made ovens for this purpose. Bricks made like this were popular even in ancient Egypt. Nowadays the building landscape has changed dramatically. One of the highlights of the construction industry came with cement mixers. Today we take the cement mixers we see on construction sites for granted but this was not always the case. Long ago, the Greeks mixed asphalt with water and other things to obtain a material that became ideal for construction when it hardened. This concrete material was called "cement," which in Greek means "safe."

Cement is actually a mixture of different materials. Alongside the previously mentioned asphalt are sand and limestone. The Greeks, who invented cement, made many structures from cement in ancient times. Babylon flourished with new construction and all new buildings were using asphalt and cement around 625 BC. For the next several centuries we sometimes find mention of this method of making cement. Around the 16th century, this art found a revival. Most European civilizations began to employ it again. This was because the Venezuelans were still using the building techniques of the ancient Greeks. The approach quickly spread and the idea was used in many places, including shipbuilding!

By the nineteenth century, cement construction was being introduced to America, along with other aspects of the Industrial Revolution. Natural resources have been exploited in Trinidad's cement industry. By the twentieth century, some new items were being tried. When some new material was added to the cement, the concrete developed. This type of concrete is very common on the roads.

When a lot was happening in the cement industry, the art of mixing had to revolutionize. Cement mixers became very popular in the early twentieth century. This coincided with the increase in the use of motor vehicles. Cement mixers contain trays. These trays were heated over boiling charcoal. The mixture was set to dry in this. This was followed by pouring asphalt on it. In the initial stages, the cement was mixed manually. Then drums were invented. It used to be fixed in one place. Then an adventurous person added wheels to it and made these drums moving! There was great demand for them as good roads and sidewalks were constructed in great numbers. This was the case until the 1960s.

But things weren't all right. Cement mixers got caught up in environmental issues in the 1970s. Some changes had to be made. The technology of cement mixers had to be improved to become environmentally friendly and keep pace with the changing times.
