|
When you hear the term 'obsessive,' you may think of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). People may misuse the term to describe someone who, for example, has certain preferences about the organization.
But obsessions can occur outside of an OCD diagnosis.
Before delving into the psychology of mania, it's good to remember that not every mania needs to be considered a serious symptom of a mental health condition.
Although many mental health conditions can include obsessions as possible symptoms, people often experience obsessions outside of a mental health condition.
If you feel you are going through obsessions, know that you can manage and process these thoughts and find relief with the right resources.
What is obsession?
An obsession is a recurring thought about something or someone that always seems to be on the person's mind.
Obsessions may be a fleeting event or a long-term interest, and they may or may not be uncomfortable experiences.
Obsessions are often repeated in your daily life as follows:
Thoughts
dreams
Urges
fantasies
Kevin Majeres, MD, elaborates on this definition, saying that obsessive thoughts can be disturbing or have negative connotations.
extraneous thoughts
Obsessions may also feel a bit like intrusive thoughts — unwelcome thoughts that can make you feel anxious.
Most people have intrusive or unwanted thoughts from time to time. However, not all intrusive or unwanted thoughts are obsessive.
Anxiety
It can be difficult to distinguish between obsessions and anxieties. Anxiety tends to be something that is within reason or likely to happen.
Obsessive behavior and symptoms
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th Edition), you may be dealing with an obsession if you experience stressful thoughts or urges that cause you to try to eliminate these thoughts or calm the stress associated with them.
These obsessive-compulsive traits can be associated with many of the symptoms of OCD, although obsession does not necessarily mean that you have OCD.
