Habits
For all practical purposes, head lice appear only on the head due to the requirements for warmth and high humidity.

It is usually transmitted by direct contact with two heads, by combs, hairbrushes, sharing hats, or by caps that are temporarily stored for contact with other hats.
The diagnosis
The most important indication of a head lice problem is the presence of eggs or nits. This is because nits are more numerous than lice and are not active or easily removed.
Scrubbing the child at the back of the scalp or the back of the neck causes lice to be suspected.
The itching associated with the lice is more likely to lead to a secondary infection that is more likely to itch than the bites themselves.
Head lice infestation
Socioeconomic group or household income level has nothing to do with who is infected.
Lead lice problems are especially common among younger school children.
Caucasian (white) children are more likely to have head lice problems than Afro-American (black) children.
Girls are up to 5% more likely to be affected than boys.
Cutting or wearing shorter hair does not prevent or eliminate injury, but it does make examination easier.
Head lice control
Controlling head lice is a medical problem, period!
This is because head lice essentially spend all of their time on a human's head unless they are accidentally dislodged.
For all practical purposes, they cannot survive more than 48 hours outside of their host.
Lice that are easily displaced or dropped from their host are usually weak and unlikely to infect a new host.
Note: For these three reasons, residual pesticide treatments are unlikely to have any control value.
Control over the human host
The typical treatment for a head lice infestation consists of prescription shampoo treatments or over-the-counter lotions that contain pesticides. Follow the directions on the product label.
Two or more treatments are needed because not all eggs / nits are killed on the first use. A second treatment is usually prescribed for 7-10 days afterward, allowing time for any viable eggs to hatch. This is because the egg / nits stage is resistant to pesticide penetration.
The control method is non-pesticide. Using a lice comb to remove lice and nits has become the preferred method of control. The reasons are:
Insecticide-resistant lice (up to 100%) are encountered with increasing frequency, especially for pyrethrin / pyrethroid products.
Misuse or inappropriate use of over-the-counter and prescription materials can cause problems; Under application encourages the development of resistance, and excessive application may cause problems for the treating person. |
